It’s a return to Texas, his home state, for Scott, a bright young defensive mind. This past season was his first in his position at Louisiana Tech.

Scott replaces former Texas Tech defensive backs coach Kevin Curtis, who was dismissed in December and hired as Louisiana Tech’s cornerbacks coach last month. Scott is the second Red Raiders assistant hired from Louisiana Tech’s staff, joining running backs coach Jabbar Juluke, who arrived last month.

Prior to Scott’s time in Ruston, he spent three seasons at Southeastern Louisiana, where he coached linebackers for the first two years before being promoted to defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for his final campaign. During that season, Scott’s unit finished seventh in the FCS in total defense, eighth in scoring defense and 11th in turnovers gained. It was also first in the FCS in team passing efficiency defense (94.3) and second in interceptions (21).

Scott was an assistant at Tusculum from 2008–11. Besides being the program’s recruiting coordinator, he coached linebackers his first two seasons before moving to defensive backs his final two years. While at Tusculum, Scott helped linebacker Justin Scott set single-season and career school records for tackles for loss.

Scott was a graduate assistant at Delta State in 2007, tutoring linebacker Michael Eubanks, who finished his career as NCAA Division II’s career sack leader. A Houston native, Scott also had a brief stint as linebackers coach at Hardin-Simmons following his playing days at McMurry from 2003–06.

Texas Tech had an improved 7–6 record this past season. During Kingsbury’s three seasons in charge of the Red Raiders, he has a 19–19 record with two bowl appearances.
