Brazilian surfer Ricardo dos Santos died Tuesday, one day after he was shot three times outside his home in the coastal town of Guarda do Embau. He was 24.

According to Brazilian media reports, dos Santos was shot three times in the torso by an off-duty military police officer after some sort of argument. There are conflicting reports as to what the argument was over. Police have reportedly arrested the shooter and his brother.

Dos Santos was airlifted to a hospital, where he underwent four surgeries. He was placed in a medically induced coma before dying of multiple organ failure.

Dos Santos had been featured on the cover of the November 2014 issue of Surfer Magazine.

In 2012, dos Santos knocked surfing legend Kelly Slater out of a major tournament in Tahiti. On Tuesday, Slater remembered dos Santos as "one of the great barrel riders" in a post on his Instagram page.
