Tampa Bay Rays designated hitter Jerry Sands caused a spike in the team's equipment budget, breaking three bats on three consecutive swings in Sunday's game against the Astros.
Sands received a steady diet of inside fastballs from Houston reliever Jerome Williams in the eighth inning and went through quite a bit of lumber before finally mustering a broken bat single that drove in a game-winning run.
Upon further investigation it was determined that the bats were not, in fact, made of balsa wood.[Deadspin]
