Celtics to debut 'Lucky Alternate' logo

Perhaps a "lucky alternate" from Boston's leprechaun will bring good omens to a Celtics team currently in the midst of a major rebuilding phase.

The organization is set to unveil a pretty cool retro logo on Adidas team merchandise and apparel in July. It's more or less the same as the logo we're used to seeing, but it's a bit different and has a cool backstory to it -- it was a 1960s illustration created by Zang Auerbach, the brother of Hall of Fame Celtics coach Red Auerbach. Zang was an editorial and sports artist for newspapers in the Washington area; perhaps there's alternate logos of the Bullets buried in some attic for the Wizards to use soon, too.

The "lucky alternate" won't be on Celtics jerseys -- yet -- but who knows? Maybe one day, anti-tobacco groups will fight to remove the cigar from the iconic logo.
