Devils Fans Troll Rangers With Their Own Celebration After Game 7 Win

If you’ve ever attended a Rangers game at Madison Square Garden, then you’re familiar with the tune: an up-tempo beat, a long “whoa” and then a lot of “heys.”

A crowning achievement in songwriting? Not quite. But that doesn’t mean “Slapshot” isn’t one of the most iconic goal songs in the NHL. On Monday night, however, it turned into New York’s torment anthem.

The Devils knocked off the Rangers, 4–0, in Game 7 on Monday, advancing to the second round and sending their Big Apple rivals packing. After the game, Devils fans flocked the streets in celebration, and used New York’s own goal song against them in an expert-level bit of trolling that was surely heard from across the Hudson River.

“Slapshot” has been played at Rangers home games since 1995, and is beloved by the team’s fans. Yet New York has not won a Stanley Cup since adopting the song as its goal anthem of choice.

That’s not to say that “Slapshot” is the reason for the franchise’s title drought, though hearing fans of the team that just ended your season sing it in the streets to mock you might just give Rangers fans pause from singing it themselves anytime soon.
