ASCOT, England (AP) Free Eagle held off The Grey Gatsby's late threat to win the Prince of Wales' Stakes, the feature race on day two of the Royal Ascot meeting on Wednesday.

Despite being off the track since finishing third in the Champion Stakes in October, Free Eagle was the 5-2 favorite for trainer Dermot Weld.

As the pacesetting French raider Gailo Chop began to fade from the home turn, Free Eagle was sent to the lead and quickened smartly to take a couple of lengths out of the field.

The Grey Gatsby, the 9-2 shot ridden by Jamie Spencer, was making ground all the way to the line, but lost to Free Eagle by a short head.

Western Hymn was third, with The Corsican fourth.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II attended the meeting.
