The Nationals have scratched starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg from his scheduled start on Monday due to elbow soreness and placed him on the 15-day disabled list, the team announced.

A.J. Cole was recalled from Triple A to start in his place against the Orioles.

Strasburg had been hot all season, but began to struggled in late July when he allowed six runs against the Dodgers in a start on July 21. Over his past three outings, he’s allowed 19 runs in just 11 2/3 innings to bring his ERA from 2.63 to 3.59.

According to the New York Post’s Joel Sherman, Strasburg’s elbow issue “is not structural,” and the Nationals are placing their ace on the DL to get him healthy for a playoff run.

This will be the righthander’s second trip to the disabled list this season after straining his upper back in a June weight room mishap.
