Mariners Send Former Cy Young Winner Robbie Ray to Giants in Three-Player Trade
The Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants, partners on many swaps in recent years, officially made their biggest trade yet.
The Mariners sent right-handed pitcher Robbie Ray to the Giants in exchange for outfielder Mitch Haniger and left-handed pitcher Anthony DeSclafani, the team announced Friday.
Ray won the 2021 AL Cy Young Award in his lone full season with the Toronto Blue Jays, leading the league with a 2.84 ERA, 248 strikeouts and 1.045 WHIP. He signed a five-year contract worth $115 million that offseason with Seattle.
In 2022, Ray logged a 12–12 record, 3.71 ERA and 10.1 K/9 for the Mariners. His 2023 campaign ended after just 3 1/3 innings when he suffered a forearm injury in his season debut, and he underwent Tommy John surgery in May.
Ray, a former Cy Young winner, is being traded from the Mariners to the Giants via trade.

Ray is owed $23 million in 2024 and has a two-year player option worth $50 million for the ’25 and ’26 seasons.
Haniger returns to Seattle, where he spent six years from 2017 to ’22 before signing with the Giants last offseason. Haniger struggled through injures in ’23 and batted just .209/.266/.365 with six homers in 61 games.
The 33-year-old DeSclafani logged a 4.88 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) in ’23. He is owed $12 million in ’24 and will be an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
Ray joins the Giants’ starting rotation already featuring veterans Logan Webb, Alex Cobb and promising 22-year-old left-hander Kyle Harrison.
