Weekend Primer

Your guide to the weekend, SIOC style

"Pit Stop at Tamarack," Intersection of I-77 and I-64, Beckley, WV, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.The long Meineke Car Care Bowl pilgrimage from Morgantown to Charlotte can be quite a journey. Do not fret. "The Tamarack" (a world famous tourist destination in Beckley, West Va.) will serve as a "pit stop" for Mountaineers fans. That means free coffee, free gift items and discounted WVU merchandise. The Tamarack also has the cleanest bathroom in all of Appalachia.

Motor City Bowl: Florida Atlantic vs. Western Michigan, Detroit, Mich., 7:30 p.m.I feel bad for the players. What are the chances they'd arrive in Detroit at a time when people only want to talk about the Lions? How many times has that happened in the last 20 years? Once? Twice? Thrice?

NCAA Fall Championship Highlights, CBS, 2 p.m.Good news. CBS received your angry letters about the lack of television coverage for the Division III field hockey championships and is ready to make amends.

Men's Basketball: West Virginia at No. 13 Ohio State, 4 p.m.David Lighty (the last of the Thad Five) anchors an undefeated Buckeye team sporting a pair of impressive December wins over Notre Dame and Miami. Good thing nobody told him he only had to stay in college for one year.

NIRSA Flag Football Championships, University of South FloridaRay Maualuga and Aaron Curry can flatten 235 pound running backs, but could they grab a flag? Well ... probably. Last year the "Pure Playaz" from UNC Charlotte took home the title. Hopefully this season's champions will have a funnier and more offensive name.

Men's Ice Hockey: 44th Annual Great Lakes Invitational Championship Game, Detroit, Mich., 6:30 p.m.Hockey players are so tough, they don't even take a winter break. No. 12 Michigan and No. 18 North Dakota headline the 44th edition of the annual tournament.

Men's Basketball: Rutgers at No. 1 North Carolina, 7:45 p.m.Rutgers already has losses to Binghamton, Lehigh and St. Bonaventure, so playing UNC is an opportunity to add a "quality loss" to its portfolio.
