Carmelita Jeter out of USA Track and Field championships 100 meters
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Carmelita Jeter will skip the 100-meter race at the U.S. Championships to rest a sore right quadriceps, her coach said Thursday.
Jeter already has an automatic spot at the worlds courtesy of her win in 2011. Her coach, John Smith, said they "didn't want to take any chances" with the strained quadriceps. He's confident Jeter will be ready to defend her 100 title in Moscow in August.
The 33-year-old Jeter captured three medals at the London Olympics, finishing third in the 200, second in the 100 and helping the 400-meter relay team to gold.
Allyson Felix's name doesn't appear on the start list for the 100 that begins Thursday night, but shows up in the 200, her signature event. Felix won gold in that race at the London Games.
