Is this the year the 49ers finally take the next step? That’s the question fans are asking after watching their team win 36 games, reach the Super Bowl once and the NFC Championship Game three times in three years under coach Jim Harbaugh. The 49ers’ 2013 season came to a close with Richard Sherman intercepting a pass in the end zone (and making some pointed remarks in a since-gone-viral on-field interview shortly afterward).
Whether the 49ers will have the edge this time around is an open question, though the team does look set to make another deep playoff run. San Francisco locked up quarterback Colin Kaepernick on a long-term deal, re-signed veteran receiver Anquan Boldin, acquired former Bills wideout Stevie Johnson and picked up veteran Brandon Lloyd, who has reportedly shined in workouts. San Francisco also added a couple of veterans to shore up its secondary, with cornerback Chris Cook and safety Antoine Bethea serving as potential replacements for Tarell Brown and Donte Whitner.
It’s too early to say whether the 49ers won on draft night, but we should find out sooner than later, as several of their selections could be pressed into action early. Wisconsin linebacker Chris Borland, taken in the third round, could fill in while NaVorro Bowman recovers from a knee injury and first-round pick Jimmie Ward, out of Northern Illinois, will could bolster San Francisco’s thin cornerback rotation.
SI.com assigned the 49ers a C on their offseason report card.
