The Indianapolis Colts signed running back Phillip Tanner on Tuesday, the team announced. Tanner spent the last three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.
Tanner, who was undrafted out of Middle Tennessee State in 2011, tallied nine carries for 12 yards last season. For his career, he has 149 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Last year, he also contributed on special teams for Dallas, recording nine tackles.

The Colts signed Tanner less than a week after Vick Ballard tore his Achilles in practice. With Ballard out for the second straight season, the Colts brought Tanner in for running back depth.
