The NFL has fined the New York Jets $100,000 for tampering due to comments owner Woody Johnson made about Darrelle Revis while he was still under contract with the New England Patriots, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily Newsreports

"Darrelle is a great player and if I thought I could have gotten Darrelle for that, I probably would've taken him," Johnson told reporters in December, according to NJ.com. "And it was our best judgment to do what we did. Darrelle's a great player. I'd love for Darrelle to come back."

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said in an interview with Boston radio station WEEI that he "would think that the league would look into those comments."

Johnson said later that he "misspoke" and the Patriots filed tampering charges against the Jets in January.

Revis signed with the Jets earlier this offseason and the team filed tampering charges against the Patriots after New England owner Robert Kraft commented on the signing. The Patriots were not fined, Mehta reports.
