Vikings stadium roof accident kills one worker, injures another
One construction worker was killed and another is in serious condition after falling while working on the roof of the new Minnesota Vikings stadium on Wednesday morning, reports the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
Both workers were treated at the scene and taken to a nearby medical center in Minneapolis, Mortenson Construction vice president John Wood told the Star-Tribune.
The two workers were employed by Berwald Roofing, which is the same company that was contracted for work on Target Field and Williams Arena.
One victim was retrieved by fire department personnel from a crevice on the roof. The other worker was stabilized and brought down from the roof.
“Today is an extremely sad day for the Minnesota Vikings organization and the entire stadium team,” the Minnesota Vikings said in a statement. “Our sincere thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the individual who passed away, the worker who remains hospitalized, and the more than 1,000 dedicated construction workers who are on the site every day and are also affected by this accident.”
Scaffolding on the edge of the stadium was blown off by strong gusts in late March. No one was injured in that incident.
The Vikings' stadium is currently under construction and expected to be completed for the 2016 NFL preseason. The $1 billion stadium in downtown Minneapolis will also host the 2018 Super Bowl.
