Jets rookie DE Leonard Williams: I’ll be ready for Week 1

The Jets’ 2015 first-round pick says his injured knee will be ready to go for the team’s season opener.

New York Jets rookie defensive end Leonard Williams, who left Saturday’s preseason game against the Giants with a knee strain, says he will be ready for Week 1, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

“I’ll definitely be ready by Week 1,” Williams said following practice Monday. He expects to sit out for the next 5-7 days.

The Jets begin their 2015 campaign on Sept. 13 at home against the Cleveland Browns. They have one more preseason game scheduled for Sept. 3 against the Eagles.

With Sheldon Richardsonsuspended for the Jets’ first four games, Williams, the team’s first-round pick this season out of USC, is expected to see immediate action.

Williams recorded 80 tackles and seven sacks for USC in 2014, and was named first-team All-America.
