Cleveland Browns backup quarterback Johnny Manziel says he does not need elbow surgery, despite his sore elbow sidelining him for over a week, reports ESPN.

Manziel left practice early on Aug. 23 because of soreness in his elbow and has not thrown a pass since. He missed another practice earlier in the preseason with the same injury, and said he has dealt with elbow soreness since his freshman year in college.

Manziel told ESPN surgery that was not an option, but the Browns asked legendary orthopedist Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion. Coach Mike Pettine is unsure when Manziel will return to practice.

With Manziel sitting out the Browns' final two preseason games and third-string quarterback Connor Shaw recovering from thumb surgery, Cleveland signed free-agent quarterback Pat Devlin, who has never taken a regular-season snap.

The Browns play their preseason finale against the Bears on Thursday, and open the regular season against the Jets on Sept. 13.
