Cam Newton is showcasing his speed, and his arm, early against the New York Giants.

With just over seven minutes to go in the opening quarter, Newton took the ball on a read option and ran right up the middle across midfield. Then, he angled down the right sideline to move into Giants territory, and ran out at the 3-yard line for a season-long 47-yard run.

An unnecessary roughness penalty was assessed after Newton was hit out of bounds, and the ball was moved up. A couple of plays later, he tossed a touchdown pass to Ted Ginn, Jr. to put Caroilna ahead 7–0.

The Panthers and Giants were tied at 7–7 after one quarter.
