A knife was found buried on the former Brentwood, Calif. property of O.J. Simpson, police confirmed to the Los Angeles Times on Friday.

The LAPD has opened an investigation into the history of the knife, which will undergo forensic testing.

Early on Friday, TMZ reported that a construction worker unearthed the knife “several years ago,” when Simpson’s house was demolished. The worker gave the knife to a now-retired traffic officer who was across the street working security for a movie shoot. He took the knife home, keeping it for years before turning it over to law enforcement.

Simpson lived in the mansion when his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman were stabbed to death in 1994. Simpson was acquitted in 1995.

In 1997, he was found liable for Goldman’s death and paid his family $33.5 million in damages.

Simpson is currently serving a 33-year prison sentence after he was found guilty of kidnapping and armed robbery charges in 2008. The former NFL star is eligible for parole next year.
