Report: Drew Brees seeks four-year, $100 million deal before season
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is reportedly seeking a four-year, $100 million deal with the team ahead of the season, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.
Brees does not want to negotiate during the season but contract talks have picked up in the past week, according to multiple media reports.
Brees, 37, is in the final season of the five-year, $100 million deal he signed in 2012, and is set to earn $19.7 million this season.
If Brees makes it to free agency, the Saints would need to spend almost $42 million to use the franchise tag on him for the third time.
Brees is coming off a 2015 campaign in which he threw for an NFL-best 4,870 yards with 32 touchdowns as the Saints went 7–9. New Orleans has missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.
