Falcons Invented a New Depth Chart Position for Cordarrelle Patterson
Only Cordarrelle Patterson could have his very own position.
The Falcons released their depth chart Wednesday ahead of Week 1 and many were quick to notice it didn’t look like anything they’d ever seen before. Specifically, the “J” next to Patterson’s name, indicating his position.
The point being... there’s no position in football that starts with that letter.
When talking to media members, coach Arthur Smith revealed that the “J” stands for Joker, a nod to the famed comic book character that was chosen because Patterson can play several positions. Patterson already seemed to embrace the new role and changed his X profile picture to a photo of Heath Ledger’s iconic Joker portrayal from the 2008 hit The Dark Knight.
Patterson is one of the more unique weapons in the NFL because he plays wide receiver, running back and kick returner. Just last year, the 32-year-old rushed for 695 yards, caught 21 passes for 122 yards and returned nine kicks for 284 yards.
He’s not the All-Pro he once was, but Patterson remains one of the most versatile players in the NFL today. He and the Falcons will start their season Sunday against the Panthers at 1 p.m. ET on Fox.
