2014 NHL playoffs: Current projected matchups

The Avalanche and defending Cup champion Blackhawks are on course for a first round showdown.

With the NHL regular season coming to a close, SI.com is providing daily projections of the eight first-round playoff matchups if the season were to end today.

Under the league's new format, the top three teams in each of the four divisions will qualify along with two wild cards in each conference. The division leader with the most points will play the wild card team with the fewest points in its conference. The division winner with the next highest total will play the other wild card while the 2-3 seeds in each meet.

The second round seeding will remain within the respective divisions, though a wild card team from one -- for example, the Metropolitan's Blue Jackets -- could be matched against an Atlantic first round winner such as the Canadiens or Lightning.

The regular season concludes on April 13.
