Lightning acquire Carter Ashton, David Broll in trade with Maple Leafs

Carter Ashton and David Broll are headed south.

The Toronto Maple Leafs shipped the two to Tampa Bay for a seventh-round pick in the 2016 draft.

The move was in order to clear some cap space for the Leafs, who now have 48 players under contract, two under the NHL limit.

Ashton was a 2009 first-round pick, but hasn’t seen much playing time with the Leafs. He hasn’t scored a point since last season and has none in seven games this year. He’s been out of the lineup since Jan. 3. He also recieved a 20-game suspension for a drug violation earlier this season.

Broll hasn’t played in the NHL since 2013-14, and has one assist in five career games.
