Wayne Gretzky Jersey From Last NHL Game Sells for $715K at Auction

Wayne Gretzky’s autographed jersey from the last game of his career sold for $715,120 at auction on Sunday night. The winning bid was one of 21 placed on the item at Grey Flannel Auctions.

During the game, in which Gretzky played for the Rangers, New York played its season finale in an overtime loss to the Penguins on April 18, 1999. Gretzky notched an assist in the game, which became the 2,857th and final point of his record-setting career.

The jersey fetched the third-highest price ever for a hockey jersey, behind only Gretzky’s final jersey from his tenure with the Oilers and Paul Henderson’s jersey from the Canadian national team’s win over the U.S.S.R. in 1972.

Madison Square Garden previously owned the Rangers jersey and used it as part of its “Defining Moments” display from 2016 to ’19. Gretzky’s No. 99 was retired league-wide a year after his retirement. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999 after the mandatory three-year waiting period was waived.
