Spencer Gallagher apologizes for fight with John Wes Townley

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Spencer Gallagher apologized Monday for his role in a fight with John Wes Townley during NASCAR's Truck Series race at Gateway Motorsports Park.

The two were involved in a pair of on-track incidents that culminated in a scuffle during Saturday night's race. After both drivers climbed from their damaged trucks, Townley charged at Gallagher and knocked him to the ground.

Townley landed several punches to Gallagher's face as he held him in a headlock.

In a statement, Gallagher apologized to Townley, his team and fans.

''The incident earlier in the race was not intentional and certainly was not meant to cause bigger problems later in the event,'' he said. ''My crew, who have worked so hard to get me to where I am this season, did not deserve to have their night ended in that way.

''I would like to extend a sincere apology to the NASCAR community - representatives and fans. I love this sport just as much as all of you and I am ashamed that I was part of an incident that has allowed so many to view what we do in a negative light.''

The fight has received widespread attention on various media platforms, and NASCAR chairman Brian France said jokingly Monday on Sirius NASCAR Radio that neither driver has a future as a UFC champion.
