The St. Louis Cardinals announced Tuesday that they would not be picking up the options of shortstop Rafael Furcal or relief pitcher Octavio Dotel, according to the team's website. Both players appeared in the World Series last week.
The door is not necessarily shut for either player to return to St. Louis, but they won't be earning what they were expecting. Furcal would have made $12 million, and Dotel would have earned $3 million in 2012. Dotel has been a career reliever, and he has bounced around the league in his 12 years of service. Furcal's best years came with the Atlanta Braves, but it took this year's run with the Cardinals to earn him a ring.
