The Los Angeles Clippers announced Monday that they have claimed point guard Chauncey Billups off waivers. Billups was waived by the New York Knicks Saturday.

A five-time all-star, Billups averaged 16.8 points and 5.4 assists a game last year with the Knicks and Denver Nuggets. The Clippers had been interested in New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul, but general manager Neil Olshey told the Associated Press that the cost was too high. Billups was drafted third overall by the Boston Celtics in the 1997 NBA Draft, and he has since played with seven different teams.
