Former NBA leading scorer Tracy McGrady, who at one time was as hot a commodity as Orlando Magic star Dwight Howard, cautions the three-time Defensive Player of the Year against demanding a trade to the New Jersey Nets, according to Yahoo! Sports.

“I can’t see him coming here,” McGrady told Yahoo! Sports while playing a road game in the Nets arena. “If it’s just Dwight and D-Will, he’s better off just staying in Orlando. You want to go to a team that’s championship caliber, and just him and D-Will won’t get it done. There’s got to be other pieces around to make it look sweet.”

Howard has been the center of rampant speculation over the past several weeks after the All-Star center apparently requested a trade from the Magic to the New Jersey Nets. Howard, 26, is expected to opt-out of his contract at the end of this season, however his commitment to re-sign with the Magic long-term has remained up in the air. Some within the Magic organization have reportedly expressed optimism about retaining Howard despite his demands, and as a result have pushed back any potential trade until later in the season. Last season, the five-time All-Star averaged 22.9 points, 14.1 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. It is believed he will become a free agent next offseason through an opt-out clause in his contract.
