Boston Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka threw his first bullpen session since undergoing Tommy John surgery in June, according to MLB.com. Matsuzaka worked out at the team's facility in Ft. Myers, Fla. He is targeting a return by mid- to late-season.

"Today is like a warm up," Matsuzaka told Kyodo News, according to the report. "I think I'll throw harder next week."

Matsuzaka, 31, threw 21 pitches Tuesday, and is scheduled to throw again Wednesday and Friday. Before he was injured last season, Matsuzaka was 3-3 with an ERA over five in 37 1/3 innings. This is the last year of his six-year contract in Boston.
