The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have hired Butch Davis as a special assistant to head coach Greg Schiano, according to ESPN.com.

Davis, 60, will assist and advise Schiano, but will not perform any on-field coaching duties, according to ESPN.com. A return to coaching could have violated the terms of his severance agreement with the University of North Carolina, according to ESPN.com. Davis has also previously served as head coach of the Cleveland Browns, the defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys and the head coach at the University of Miami.
