Ohlendorf was released by the Pittsburgh Pirates last season after posting an 8.15 ERA in just nine starts. In 21 starts just one year before he had posted a 4.07 ERA while striking out 6.6 batters per nine innings. In 2009, Ohlendorf seemed like one of the more promising pitchers in the Pirates system. At the age of 26 he posted an 11-10 record with a 3.92 ERA in 29 starts for Pittsburgh.
