The San Jose Mercury News reports that Tom Martinez, a longtime quarterbacks coach at the College of San Mateo in California who mentored Tom Brady, has died. It was his 66th birthday.

Martinez announced in June that he had just weeks to live due to complications from diabetes. Today he suffered a heart attack during kidney dialysis; he had been waiting for a transplant. Martinez was one of the most successful athletic coaches in California community college history. He coached football, women's basketball and softball at the College of San Mateo.
