Alex Webster, former star running back and later coach of the New York Giants, died Saturday at a hospital in Florida, according to the Associated Press. He was 80.
Webster played for the Giants from 1955 to '64 and served as head coach from '69 to '73. He rushed for 4,638 yards, fifth on the franchise's all-time list, and 39 touchdowns. "Alex was one of the all-time great Giants," team co-owner John Mara said in a release. "He contributed so much to our team as a player, assistant coach and head coach. He was an even better person. We shall miss him dearly."
