The San Antonio Spurs are on the verge of signing guard Patty Mills, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.
The 23-year-old Australian native was recently cleared by the Chinese Basketball Association to return to the United States and rejoin the NBA. Mills last played stateside for the Portland Trail Blazers; once the Blazers renounce his rights and make him a free agent, he will officially sign with San Antonio.
The Spurs have been in the market for a reserve guard since the retirement of T.J. Ford earlier this week. They were expected to pursue Derek Fisher, who was recently traded from Los Angeles to Houston and now expects a buyout, but instead the Spurs have gone with Mills as the backup for point guard Tony Parker from this point forward. Mills played in 74 total games for the Blazers over two seasons, averaging 5.1 points and 1.5 assists in 11.1 minutes of play per contest. He shot 35.8 percent from 3-point range.
