The New York Jets have signed Australian rugby star Hayden Smith to a three-year contract, according to ESPN New York. Smith, who is 6-foot-7 and 240 pounds, projects as a tight end.

"A lot of coaches shy away from guys who haven't played the game because it is an exhausting process. To me, that's the exciting part," said Tim Brewster, Smith’s personal coach. "Taking a piece of clay like that. And I am going to tell you, Hayden Smith is one beautiful piece of clay. Just mold him into what you want him to be." According to ESPN, financial terms weren’t immediately available. Smith played college basketball at Division II Metropolitan State in Denver, Co., and took up rugby. He went on to make the U.S. National team and played professional rugby in England. According to ESPN, Smith ran the 40-yard-dash in 4.7 seconds.
