Jones has spent the last 11 seasons at North Texas, compiling a record of 190-146. The Mean Green made two NCAA tournament appearances in his tenure, never making it beyond the first round. He also spent a season as interim coach at Memphis in 1999-2000, going 15-16.

As a freshman at LSU in 1981, Jones reached the Final Four with the team. He returned to serve 12 years as an assistant under legendary coach Dale Brown.

Jones will replace Trent Johnson, who left LSU for the same position at TCU.
