Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward tweeted yesterday to thank fans who showed support for him in face of the racial epithets sent his way on Twitter Thursday night.

Several news outlets publicized racist tweets shared by hundreds of Bruins fans last night after Ward scored the series clinching goal in overtime of Game 7. With the score the Capitals will advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In 73 games this season, Ward scored six goals and tallied 12 assists for 18 points.
