Baltimore Orioles left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada has elected to undergo Tommy John surgery, the team announced today. He is out for the season.

Wada did not pitch for the Orioles this season -- he was placed on the disabled list during spring training with elbow discomfort. He had progressed well in extended spring training and was expecting to make a rehab start soon, but the elbow pain returned and Wada opted for Tommy John after an MRI exam and CT scan.

The procedure will be performed on May 11 in Los Angeles by Dr. Lewis Yocum. Wada, 31, signed a two-year, $8.15 million contract with the Orioles this past offseason after five years with the Softbank Hawks of the Japan Pacific League.
