Big East commissioner John Marinatto has resigned, sources have told CBS Sports.

CBS reports that Marinattowas was asked to resign by the league's presidents. The Big East will hold their annual spring meetings next week.

Marinatto had been the conference's commissioner since the summer of 2009. His resignation marks the end of the shortest stint as commissioner in conference history. His predecessor, Mark Tranghese, served as the commissioner for 20 years. Dave Gavitt, the league's first commissioner, served for 22 years. Marinatto's resignation comes after several major schools chose to leave the conference, including Pittsburgh, Syracuse, West Virginia, and TCU.
