Los Angeles Angels outfielder Vernon Wells will be out for several months recovering from surgery on his right thumb, according to local TV announcer Victor Rojas.

Wells, 33, was struggling at the plate this season with an on-base percentage of just .282. With the veteran outfielder out of the mix, and Torii Hunter away from the team while his son deals with a sexual assault allegation, the Angels will now lean on a trio of youngsters -- Mike Trout, Peter Bourjos and Mark Trumbo -- to anchor their outfield for the time being. The Angels are currently 18-24, last in the American League West. They open a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics tonight.
