Southern California's run to a national championship has taken an early hit.
According to a report by ESPNLosAngeles.com's Pedro Moura, starting defensive end Devon Kennard tore a pectoral muscle lifting weights and will require surgery in the next week.
The report states Kennard is expected to be out 2-3 months, but ultimately he could miss the entire 2012 season and redshirt, making him a fifth-year senior in 2013.
Kennard started five games as defensive end last season, but played in all 12 games. He recorded 29 tackles and two sacks for the Trojans in 2011 and had 72 tackles at middle linebacker in 2010.
