Report: Big East to name CBS VP Mike Aresco as commissioner

The Big East will name CBS Sports executive vice president of programming Mike Aresco as its new commissioner, reports sportswriter Mark Blaudschun.

Aresco has been in charge of programming for CBS Sports and CBS College Sports Network, according to his bio on the CBS Sports' website. He joined CBS in 1996.

The Big East, which has stretched its geographic boundaries to stay viable after it lost some of its top football-playing programs, is set to begin negotiating a new contract for its television rights on Sept. 1.

The value of college sports deals has risen sharply in recent years, with the Pac-10 (now Pac-12) quadrupling its rights fees and the ACC signing a new contract with ESPN that gave its members $4.1 million per season more than under its previous contract.
