Iowa quarterback and punter John Wienke was committed to Michigan when long-time coach Lloyd Carr retired. Wienke, a pro-style quarterback, was trying to decide whether to stick with the Wolverines and new coach Rich Rodriguez's spread option scheme or change his committment to Iowa, reports The Gazette's Scott Dochterman.

"When Coach Carr retired, he was the one — I actually always liked Iowa — but he told me probably to go with Iowa,” Wienke told Dochterman. “That’s probably the next-best thing that was going to be for me with my style of play."
Wienke took Carr's advice. He hasn't been able to reach the field much as a quarterback, but Wienke, now a senior, is fighting for the starting punter spot, Dochterman reports. Wienke also still takes reps with the quarterbacks.
