A Russian KHL team would attempt to sign Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin if the NHL faced another lockout this season, according to a report in RIA Novosti (via The Washington Post).

Dynamo Moscow general manager Andrey Safronov told RIA Novosti that the team would speak with Ovechkin in the event of an NHL lockout.

“We will talk with Ovechkin. It will be up to the head coach,” Safronov said.

Ovechkin, the Capitals' captain, suited up with Dynamo Moscow for four seasons. He played with the team during the 2004-05 lockout that lasted the entire season, which would have been his first with Washington.

Last season, the 26-year-old Ovechkin suffered through his worst in the NHL, totaling a career-low 65 points on 38 goals and 27 assists.

With players and owners far apart on a deal after their latest meeting last week, a lockout is beginning to loom as more and more likely. The deadline to reach a deal before a lockout is Sept. 15.
