The Portland Trail Blazers announced on Tuesday that third-year guard Elliot Williams will need surgery to repair a torn left Achilles tendon.

Williams suffered the injury during voluntary workouts at the team's practice facility. A date for the surgery has not been set; recovery could take six months or more, and he may never regain his previous form.

A former Duke and Memphis player, Williams is gaining a rep as a injury-prone. The 22nd overall selection in the 2010 draft missed his entire rookie season after surgeries on both knees, and then he missed almost the final two months of last season with a left shoulder injury.
