Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte will not play this Sunday against the St. Louis Rams because of an ankle injury, Bears head coach Lovie Smith said.

Forte has not practiced all week after suffering a right ankle sprain during the Bears loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 13.

Michael Bush will take Forte's place in the starting lineup. Bush signed a four-year, $14 million contract in the offseason, after spending last season with the Oakland Raiders. Bush started nine games last season and rushed for 977 yards.

Bush has 96 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns this season.

"Michael has started a lot in the league and has been in this role before," Smith said. "There are not many Matt Forte's out there but our back up plan is pretty good, and Mike's going to step in there and do a great job."
