Colorado Rockies first baseman Jason Giambi will interview for an open manager position with the team for next season, according to a report Tuesday morning from Troy E. Renck of The Denver Post:

He will be the last in-house candidate before the Rockies talk to other candidates. There is no timetable for a hiring.

Giambi has never coached but did spend part of this past season for the Rockies working with players on their hitting and talking strategy with team executives. He had hernia surgery earlier in October and doesn't want to shut the door just yet on his playing career. He submits his candidacy to the Rockies at a time when the league is seeing an uptick in the number of first-time managers now available: Tim Wallach, Sandy Alomar, Brad Ausmus and Dave Martinez.

The team spent two days earlier in October having internal discussions with bench coach Tom Runnells, who is reportedly a candidate for the same manager position being eyed by Giambi.
