Marty Schottenheimer sues UFL for unpaid compensation

Marty Schottenheimer, the former NFL coach who also had a stint with the UFL's Virginia Destroyers, is suing UFL founder Bill Hambrecht $2.3 million in unpaid compensation, reports NBC Sports. The complaint stated:

After a period of negotiation, Schottenheimer expressed a willingness to serve as the head coach and general manager of the team…. However, because the financial stability and long-term survival of the UFL were unclear, Schottenheimer wanted assurances that the payments owed to him by Team Virginia under his employment contract would be personally guaranteed by Hambrecht.  Hambrecht agreed to personally guarantee Team Virginia’s payments to Schottenheimer during the first year of his employment.

Schottenheimer is not the first coach in the league to sue; Sacramento Lions coach Dennis Green filed a lawsuit against the league for unpaid wages in July. Without explanation, the Destroyers replaced Marty Schottenheimer and named his brother Kurt Schottenheimer coach in September.

The UFL's general financial situation puts the league's existence in jeopardy. According to Courthouse News Service, "the UFL informed Schottenheimer that it was unclear whether the UFL would continue to exist as an operating football league, due [to] its distressed financial situation.”
