In the midst of public outcries and Twitter-shaming, the NYC Marathon has been canceled. NBC news first reported the cancellation, after rumors flew for several hours.

There has been pressure to cancel the marathon given the current condition of New York City post-Hurricane Sandy. Victims of the hurricane were upset with the marathon after a New York Post story wrote that generators being used to prepare for the race could power 400 homes.

There is no word yet on whether or not the marathon will be rescheduled.
