Reports: Ray Horton furious over Cardinals hiring Bruce Arians as coach

Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton is furious about being passed over for their head-coaching job, according to multiple reports.

The Cardinals and Bruce Arians came to an agreement on a reported four-year contract Thursday night, with a team option for a fifth year. Yahoo Sports' Mike Silver reported that Horton — who was still under contract with the Cardinals despite former head coach Ken Whisenhunt's firing — will be fired as defensive coordinator and replaced by Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Meanwhile, Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910 reported that Horton engaged in a "heated exchange" with general manager Steve Keim after learning of the Cardinals' decision to go with Arians. Horton thought he would get the gig when Mike McCoy became the head coach of the Chargers.

USA Today's Mike Garafolo confirmed Jurecki's report, saying Horton was "pissed."

The Cardinals and Arians agreed late Thursday night on a contract after meeting Thursday. Arians served as the Colts' interim head coach for most of last season while Chuck Pagano was being treated for leukemia. He led the Colts to a 9-3 record under his tenure as head coach until Pagano returned to coach the team on Dec. 30 against the Houston Texans.
