BYU player hits game-winning shot after learning dad has cancer

When BYU guard Matt Carlino's shot clanked off the front rim, Craig Cusick was in the right place.

Cusick grabbed the rebound and, in one motion, tossed in a shot from the middle of the lane, giving the Cougars a 70-68 win over Utah State on Tuesday.

Only hours earlier, The Salt LakeTribune's Jay Drewreports, Cusick learned that his father had cancer. Randy Cusick had collapsed on Sunday, Drew reports, and doctors discovered the cancer on Tuesday.

Craig Cusick didn't mention his father's health in the postgame news conference, but he credited his teammates for the victory, reports Drew.

"Hard to explain. As a player, you couldn't dream it any better. I was just fortunate. Coach called a great play. I saw that when Matt shot it that there was a chance that it was going to be a little bit short. I ran where I thought it was going to come off, and I was fortunate the ball came to me. It's great that I made the shot, but I have to give credit to my teammates who pulled us through the rest of the way."
